Mississippi Flood

As of May 3, 2011, The Mississippi River is flooding to around 25 ft above the normal level this time of year, flooding most farmland in Tennessee. One way to reduce flooding on farmland is to put sub-surface drainage tile in at about 3 ft deep. That means that there is a pipe with holes in it absorbing the water and directing it some where else (i.e, a place with very little water). You can do this at home with a PVC pipe, wood glue, a saw, and a drill with a twist drill bit and a spade bit the diameter of the pipe you want to use in the planter. All you need to do is:

  1. Measure the length of the planter (make sure that the pipe at least one inch larger than the planter you want to put it in)
  2. Cut the pipe to length
  3. Drill a few holes in the PVC pipe with the twist drill bit
  4. Cut out a hole about the diameter of the pipe you want to put in
  5. Slide the pipe through the hole until it's at the end
  6. Glue the pipe in place
  7. Fill the Planter with dirt
  8. Plant your Flowers or Vegetables
The reason I said to make the PVC pipe an inch or more longer than the planter is so you can drain the water into a bucket and reuse the water. Now the finished product should look like this:
